MOD SPOKE SAID IT! Printing matters

I feel incredibly lucky that Erin Thomas creator of Mod Spoke would take the time to write something so thoughtful. Perhaps more lucky that she trust me with her work. This was literally an impromptu spur of the moment idea we had while we were collaborating about past and present projects. I love printing anything Erin brings in. Everything just seems a little bit brighter around the shop. If you are interested in purchasing the print we were working on click here.

Preserve the World ONG | Lucas Pigliacampo

In Honor of Earth Day 2015 I wanted to share some images that really spoke to me.  Out of Madrid Spain graphic designer and photographer Lucas Pigliacamo created a few images called “Preserve the World.” When I came across these a couple months back I knew I wanted to post on an important day that emphasizes the impotence of mother nature and how important it is that we conserve what’s left of the world that’s already been destroyed by greed, trash, laziness and ignorance.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Portsmouth Print Shop Makes Customizing Artwork as Simple as Point and Click
Live Free Photography’s sister company open its virtual doors as a new, convenient online method to place custom art and framing orders.

Portsmouth, N.H. (November 2014) – Portsmouth Print Shop (PPS), the online destination for custom framing and fine art canvases, is pleased to announce that it is officially open for business at www.portsmouthprintshop.com. A sister company to Live Free Photography (LFP), the photographic resource for the greater NH Seacoast area, PPS provides all the great services of LFP but from the convenience of one’s home. With the click of a mouse, customers can visit PPS online, upload and print their favorite artwork, request a custom frame order or buy artwork from regional artists. Customers will still receive the same great service as they would in person.

“At Portsmouth Print Shop we like to think we are artists first and have an eye for what another artist would be looking for,” remarked Emily Brackett, Owner of PPS and LFP. “We hope that by offering this online service we will be able to better serve our existing client base who already know and trust our craftsmanship, as well as to attract a new clientele that might not be aware of us or who live too far away to visit our physical location. We’ve recently relocated to a larger facility that allows us to have all the proper tools and equipment to make a customer’s order perfect.”

****

PPS has the advantage of being a small and efficient business, which means that every order placed online is reviewed by an actual artist’s eye. Before placing an order customers can contact PPS to discuss the best option for their work. This attention to detail provides the online buyer with the same level of customer care that they would receive if they were to make an appointment and visit the shop in person.

A feature that sets PPS apart from its competition is its unique Visualization Picture Framing Software. Utilizing this software, when a customer visits the site to place an online frame order, he or she can actually preview what the finial product will look like. The customer can easily change out frames, mats or glazing and even choose the color of the wall it will hang on to get the full effect of the finished product before placing the order.

Being a local business, PPS supports and features published and regional artists upon its site, such as David Mendelsohn, Michael Winters, Joe Stevens. Matt Rosenberg , Chris Keeley, Patricia Corlin Shawn Burke, Naddy Graham and Erin Duquette and Customers can browse the continuously updated artwork from these local artists and purchase them directly from the site.

Behind the scenes with Chris Keeley

DSC_0490

There’s a lot of jobs that come through the door, all of them special in their own way of course. Sometimes I have to get jobs out so quickly I don’t have time to take pictures or document how they are made. But this time I decide to make the time to snap a few photos to show what goes on behind the scenes before art work goes on the walls.

This job was brought to me by a client who keeps me on my toes. He always seems to have a new photography project rolling in, on top of his full time job at UNH.  He’s attention to details and professionally makes it a pleasure to work with him.

Take a look for yourself. Visit Chris Keeley’s website and Facebook page. Chris is available for hire from cooperate shots to weddings. Browse his landscape collections, find something that will look nice framed in your home.

Well, Here are the snap shots for Chris’s Project that included 5 canvas wraps and a fine art print framed. They are displayed in Richardson’s Ice Cream in Middleton, Massachusetts.

THE WOMEN’S MOTORCYCLE EXHIBIT // BEHIND THE SCENES // LANAKILA MACNAUGHTON from Austin Will on Vimeo.

Lanakila MacNaughton is a Portland based photographer and motorcyclist. Involved in many outdoor sports from a young age, Lana began documenting her experiences through photography. After developing a passion for motorcycles in her early twenties, she started documenting many facets of motorcycle culture through her lens. Lana shoots in medium format on a Hasselblad CM.

Lanakila MacNaughton speaks to her influences and mission for her latest project, “The Woman’s Motorcycle Exhibition: The Real Woman Who Ride.” Spend a day with a few of these woman as they cruise the wooded backroads of Portland, Oregon.

The Women’s Motorcycle Exhibition documents the new wave of modern female motorcyclists. The goal is to reveal the brave, courageous and beautiful women that live to ride. TheWomen’s Motorcycle Exhibition is a traveling show. The mission is to discover and present female riders from all different communities, riding backgrounds, and styles, and maybe even influence some connectivity amongst riders from these different areas. Different communities and venues are invited to host the photo exhibit to aid in this discovery.
Lanakila is always looking for women to shoot. Above all, she hopes to illustrate, and really present, the freedom, independence, excitement and personalities’ of “the born to be free” woman motorcyclists.

LFP is very proud Peter Connors of 03801 productions asked us to make over 50 frames and photos for the cast/crew/production of the public service announcement, starring Portsmouth’s Elle Shaheen titled “Stand Up, Step Forward,” Which seeks to spread awareness of child abuse. It was produced in association with the National Children’s Alliance , and by Exeter High School graduate Kevin Gendron , who headed to School of Public Communications at Syracuse University last fall.

PORTSMOUTH — When Kevin Gendron watched a video by Sheldon Kennedy on child abuse, one statistic struck him so deeply he decided to write and direct his own public service announcement.

“I found out that a child will have to talk to as many as seven adults before they are taken seriously,” said Gendron, who graduated from Exeter High School last month. “That’s a devastating statistic.”

Kennedy, a former National Hockey League player was abused as a child, and the Sheldon Kennedy Child Advocacy Centre in Calgary, Canada, was recently renamed in his honor by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Gendron, 18, is headed to the prestigious Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University in the fall.

He has been working on the PSA for about a month and on Saturday an impressive showing of crew and talent came together at Portsmouth High School to film the 30-second spot that takes place in a middle school classroom.

The PSA, “Stand Up, Step Forward,” seeks to compel adults to take that first step in leading children to the help they need. During the spot, a student, played by Elle Shaheen, 13, of Portsmouth (granddaughter of U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen) stays behind after class is dismissed. She approaches her teacher, played by Constance Witman of Newfields, talking to her in confidence about being abused.

The PSA is produced by Peter Connors, who met Gendron last summer at Portsmouth Public Media, PPM-TV, where Gendron was doing an internship. “Kevin worked with me while I was producing three PSAs for the Child Advocacy Center,” Connors said.

It was at PPM-TV that Gendron was noticed by Executive Director Bill Humphreys. “Kevin very quickly made himself known as someone with an innate ability,” Humphreys said. “He was professional, mature and not afraid to risk asking questions.”

Humphreys asked Gendron if he would like to work with Connors on PSAs the TV station was producing for the Child Advocacy Center based in Portsmouth.

“Peter recognized something in Kevin,” Humphreys said. “He is strong, yet sweet, with an intelligent energy. He is a shining piece of gold that fell into the stream.”

Connors said a team of Seacoast filmmakers was recruited to make the PSA. “Kevin created a magical piece getting the best talent around,” he said.

They included Jonathon Millman, director of cinematography, Karlina Lyons, assistant director, and many other well-known professionals of lighting, sound and make-up.

Gendron also consulted Hollywood writer David McHugh and J.C. Wegman, a former animator for “The Simpsons” and “South Park,” for advice.

Brad Russ, founder and chairman of Child Advocacy’s board of directors, said he was “excited to see Kevin take it to this level to inform the public about child abuse.”

“It’s wonderful for me to watch a young man I’ve known since kindergarten as a friend of my son’s, move into adulthood and take up a cause like this,” Russ said. “I’m very proud of him.
Russ said the key is to have this video seen by the public.

“It’s a sad commentary when we see lovebirds needing a new home in the news for days,” he said. “We interview at least one child abuse victim every day at the center. This needs to be told.”

Russ thanked all the professionals who worked with Gendron pro bono on the project. Connors, too, had a list of people to thank. Financial supporters included George Venci Law PLLC, Dr. Shawn Shapiro of Port City Chiropractic, Sevigney Lyons Insurance, STREET restaurant, Ralph Martinese of Sanctuary Hair Studio, Christenson Plumbing & Heating, Progressive Electrical Services, BMCG Bookkeeping Services, Russ and Maureen Sullivan of the Child Advocacy Center, and attorney Raef J. Granger.

Film equipment supporters included Backlash Productions and Fast Lights.

The PSA will be pitched to various television stations after it is edited and no date of airing is known at this time.

Many thanks to visual artist Lauren Gillette for allowing us the opportunity to print her work for her current show, Momentum XI, at the George Marshall Gallery in York, ME. Lauren is showing her work along with photographer Bear Kirkpatrick and painter Rose Umerlik.     I hope you all get a chance to get over there. First time I saw Lauren’s work was at The Parlor at Plainspoke. The show was titled “Wish/Regret” (pictured above). She makes mug shots look good. Lindsey Lohan should have modeled. Seriously, this current show will be something you won’t expect. You’ll laugh, you’ll have to think, you might even be insulted. Lauren is one of a kind,  She was fun to talk to and work with and I wish I had been in NH to go to the reception to see everything put together, but I’m hopefully going this Saturday. I’ll take some snaps if it’s allowed. Please make it over. If it wasn’t for working with Lauren, I wouldn’t even know this show was happening. So make it over and show some support for Lauren, Bear and Rose.

Artist Reception for Pat Kennedy Corlin

CAMBODIA  – A Serendipitous Gift Of Fate. Attend the artist reception for Pat Kennedy Corlin, at the Mill Building in Newmarket, NH on 4/27/13  from 12 pm to 4pm

Pat Kennedy Corlin, owner of Performing Images Photography of Strafford, NH, recently returned from a photo journey in Cambodia, where she traveled with The Giving Lens. TGL was founded by travel photographer, Colby Brown. Brown’s vision was to provide opportunities for professional photographers and photo-enthusiasts to combine their love for photography and travel with the desire to give back.  Teams travel to a developing nation and work alongside a local non-profit organization for the betterment of the community. Guided by the TGL Leaders, who are professional photographers, participants travel through the country, into the culture, taking part in workshops at locations many will only dream of, while helping in a tangible, needed way with the NGO.

The body of work,  is a sampling of Corlin’s travels through the villages and temples of Angkor Wat. The images encompass highlights of her experiences working with The Giving Lens and the young photography students in the art program of The Anjali House of Siem Reap.

“It is my hope that these images will inspire others to be moved to action and explore new opportunities where, in some small but significant way, they too can make a difference helping others with their photography.” -Pat Kennedy Corlin

This summer, Corlin will be continuing her work with The Giving Lens, traveling to East Africa and working with the non-profit Art InTanzania and the Massai Cultural Preservation, Child Education, UNICEF Documentation Program.

“The origins of the cameras we use today were invented in the 19th century. Or were they? A millennia before, Arab scientist Alhazen was using the camera obscura to duplicate images, with Leonardo da Vinci following suit 500 years later and major innovations beginning in the 19th century. Eva Timothy tracks the trajectory from the most rudimentary cameras to the ubiquity of them today.”-TED Educator

Step 1 Color Management in Photoshop

Easiest Color Management Setting  in Adobe Photoshop

It can be difficult to manage other peoples work to prepare for print when everyone’s experience level is unique. Maybe you have never even thought about color management because you don’t print, you post to the web. Or your default camera setting were in sRGB and you never thought to change them, the list can go on…. an on…. There are hundreds of cameras, scanners, printers, monitors, papers etc…. There are 101 things to know and consider, and I am still learning every day because no two jobs are the same. I recently learned that PDF’s will have a different output when printed from Indesign instead of Photoshop, which I’m not thrilled about because I’m never in InDesign I’m a Photoshop Lady 100% … There’s no way I could list it all now. But I thought maybe it would be helpful to post the easiest setting we can make so maybe one day we’ll all be on the same page, or same canvas I might say.

Angel Olsen – Sweet Dreams (Official Video)

A Facebook friend  brought this lady Angel Olsen to my attention. I’m posting this for her use of 16mm film to create her videos. She has double and triple exposed her film. That’s no easy task. I hope you enjoy. Did I mention she has an old soul voice that I can’t place, she’s unique and beautiful. I wish her the bests.

“A transatlantic collaboration between four friends.

Two songs were written and recorded in Chicago and then sent to Vienna.

There they were translated into a film score.”

A transatlantic epistolary exchange.

A song transformed into a film score and mailed across the Atlantic Ocean.
The score interpreted using an intuitive approach and a single roll of 16mm color negative film. The film exposed, rewound and re-exposed many times, developed and sent back across the Atlantic. These images were collected with the foreknowledge that the film would be extensively manipulated in the darkroom. An archaic homemade contact printer was used to create the final look and that film was hand-processed, and rinsed and repeated all in the same room in which the score began.

Time passing. The feeling of time. Collapsing space. Collapsing time. Collapsing time and space.

*16mm print available and recommended for screening purposes. This is the digital version.

Video Tape Transfer to DVD

Video Tape Transfer to DVD VHS/ VHSC/ 8mm-Hi8-Digital 8/ Mini DV/ Betamax. Blue Ray and hard drive back ups. Movies are edited to have chapters for easy viewing.

VHS Tapes always wear out a little bit every time when we play them. Here’s how to care for them.

Tape degradation can be broken down into several categories: time, storage, handling and use.

Time: Over time the components of a video tape degrade. Most importantly the magnetic particles that contain the video data become unstable and their physical properties change.

Storage: The environment in which you store video can accelerate the degradation process. The magnetic particles respond to environmental factors such as temperature fluctuations, extreme temperature, humidity, pollution, and sunlight.

Handling: Poor handling can expedite degradation. Avoid dropping the tape or handling the tape. It is easy to transfer dust, dirt and, grease onto tapes.

Use: The quality of your tape deck is important. A misaligned deck can stretch/tear tape and pack tape poorly. A dirty deck can turn small debris into large scratches. Each time a tape is played friction occurs assisting in the degradation process

MOST importantly! Keep your VHS tapes away from speakers and magnets. You may demagnetize your tape that ruin the play back quality.

If you have tapes and reels to transfer. I recommend your doing your VHS tapes first.

Luster

Luster printing is our of our most popular material its very versatile it looks great with any image. We can print up to 44″ wide

Metallic Paper

Metallic Paper is another popular choice, although in my opinion it is not meant for all images, It tends to work best for images that have a saturated palette. Metallic is almost like a tinted pearl or silver. We can print up to 44″ wide

Canvas Printing

Canvas Printing can be used for some many different  projects, As long as it’s a digital file, anything can be printed. Canvas can sometime be coated for en extra gloss or UV protection. This application is great if you are planning or having you print outside used as house art, signage, or banners.

If you decide to wrap your canvas, there are different size stretcher bars. from 1/2″ to 1 1/2″

Smooth Fine Art Reproduction

Sometimes you need more than a photo paper, sometimes you are looking for a fine art print. Typically this is called a rag paper. Digital photography looks beautiful on a smooth fine art paper. It adds an artistic quality that is incomparable to any other print. There are also textured fine art paper but that works best for watercolor art reproductions

smooth fine art paper- art printing- art reproductions

What is a giclée?

giclée (zhee-clay) n. 1. a type of digital fine-art print. 2. Most often associated with reproductions; a giclée is a multiple print or exact copy of an original work of art that was created by conventional means (painting, drawing, etc.) and then reproduced digitally, typically via inkjet printing. First use in this context by Jack Duganne in 1991, Los Angeles, California.

Some may like to argue the true meaning of  giclée, I totally get why. The World has changed since digital photography. We have so many more capabilities to get jobs done.  Giclée used to all be done with an Iris printer. But now more people use ink jets (not all ink jest are made the same) People have adopted or adapted the word   “giclée” to  mean an art reproduction

If you have water colors or oil painting we can photograph or scan and make beautiful prints ready for resale using smooth fine art , textured, luster, or canvas. We can help decide what will work best for your project.

Poster Printing – Economy

Inventor of the Digital Camera

Inventor Portrait: Steven Sasson from David Friedman on Vimeo.

This video is part of an ongoing series of photo and video portraits of contemporary inventors from all walks of life. More can be seen here.

It’s been way too long since I’ve posted one of these. This is my portrait of Steven Sasson, inventor of the digital camera. He was the 32nd inventor in my project. I shot him in October at Kodak’s headquarters in Rochester, just a couple weeks before President Obama awarded him the National Medal of Technology.

When he initially mentioned that the first digital camera held 30 pictures, I assumed that was due to the storage capacity of the digital tape. It was really interesting to hear that he picked 30 as an artificial limitation, and his explanation why.

Update: A lot of people have asked what the subject of that first photo was. It’s an interesting story, but the short answer is that the first digital photo was a picture of a lab technician named Joy. And he didn’t save the image.

We Relocated…Again – Geographically speaking

PORTSMOUTH — Geographically speaking, it wasn’t a big move at all. Yet, according to owner Emily Brackett, it was the biggest and best move she has made.

Live Free Photography opened a little over a year ago at 16 Sheafe St. This past autumn, Brackett moved her business across the street to 11 Sheafe St.

Owner: Emily Brackett

“It was the easiest move I’ve ever made,” Brackett said. “I had run out of space and now I have double the space.”

Brackett said she looked out the window one day and saw the “for rent” sign. She walked over and found her new location.

“It was great to be able to stay in this neighborhood,” Brackett said. “I love the arty way Sheafe Street is becoming. We have a bookstore, graphic designers, book publisher and photography. It’s great.”

In fact, the past year has been so great that Brackett has not only doubled her space, she has invested in new equipment that will enable her to do all her work on the premises. She has also become business associates with Michael Winters, another photographer.

“He specializes in bands and portraits,” Brackett said. “I met him about 10 years ago, and now he’s my colleague here.”

Brackett now has room for a showroom in the front and the back room is for the equipment and studio. Brackett does movie transfers from 16mm, 8mm and VHS. The business also offers scanning services for slides, photos, film and art. Printing, photo restoration, custom framing and film supplies are available.

“I can print on fine art paper as well as all my other projects,” she said.

Brackett said people love knowing all the work is done on the premises. No fear of priceless family photos or films being lost in the mail, she explained.

“I also have all the framing equipment I need,” Brackett said. “I can chop and join. I can custom frame. My selection of frames and mats is very large.”

Brackett said that running out of space at her first location led her to revise her business plan and concentrate on exactly what she wanted for her business.

“I am finally settled enough,” Brackett said. “I have all my ducks in a row and all my resources here, on the premises.”

In other words, she explained, no more running around, using up gas and spending so much time using equipment elsewhere in the region. Brackett said jobs can now be accomplished faster and with less money spent out of the store.

“It is great to be here and to proof my own work on my own equipment,” Brackett said. “This really matters to me and to my customers.”

In the showroom, Brackett sells prints by David Mendelsohn, a local photographer who travels the world taking photos.

During the winter months, Brackett said a “by appointment” policy is working out well as the store’s regular hours are shortened until the weather gets warmer.

“All people have to do is call me and I’ll be there,” said Brackett, who lives in Portsmouth. “This location already feels like home,” Brackett said. “I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”

We’ve made it to Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH — Photographer Emily Brackett said the timing was just right to open her downtown store, Live Free Photography.

“I love this space and this is what I want to do,” Brackett said. “I’m young and feel like I had to do it now or not at all. I chose now.”

Brackett originally opened her store in Newmarket, but wanted to be in Portsmouth. A native of Portsmouth, she lives in Newmarket. Originally a major in fashion design at an art school in Massachusetts, Brackett said she found it wasn’t what she was looking for in a career.

“I traveled and took my first photography class in London,” she said. “It was love at first sight. I traveled some more in Europe and came back to study photography in Massachusetts.”

She worked at a camera store in Dover, exchanged cameras at the now defunct Eagle Photo and worked in photo labs. Through these jobs and her love of photography, she knew what was needed.

“With digital cameras, people just snap away and store in their computers,” Brackett said. “Or, they take the photos to print at a mass market, computerized place.”

Such outlets do not perform a custom job, she said. The machines scan the first few photos and print the entire group of photos the same way. “Here, I print each photo separately and make certain each one is exactly right,” she said. “More people want this sort of personalized and good service. We’re talking about photographs that will last.”

Preserving family memories is what Live Free Photography is all about. Brackett recalled a story of a boy asking his mother why there weren’t any photos of him as a baby and the mother’s reply was, “My laptop crashed.”

“All the specialty printing is done by me, in my workshop,” Brackett said. “The work is not sent out to another source.”

One thing people appreciate is being able to transfer their slides and old photographs to a restored state that will survive time, she said.

Live Free Photography offers a wide range of services and supplies. Photo restoration is a big part of the business as is printing photographs on canvas. Brackett transfers home movies to DVD, 16mm, 8mm, Super 8, VHS and more. A full line of photo supplies is also available, including Kodak, Fuji and Ilford.

Another service of Live Free Photography is putting an artist’s work on note cards and/or reproducing it as prints. Already, Brackett has some clients and their art is on display. She also sells a selection of frames and supplies.

“I also carry supplies for UNH darkroom students,” Brackett said. “I put together kits for their classes and also do it for some high school classes that still have darkrooms.”

Brackett will soon offer individual and group classes on using digital cameras and the latest techniques. “I like to think of my store as a photographic resource,” she said. “Since Eagle left, there hasn’t been a shop like this in downtown Portsmouth.”

Brackett said she found a real need for her services when she had her shop in Newmarket.

“People want help in profiling their computers,” she said. “Learning how to scan and working with digital can be so easy if you have someone to help and teach you. I want to be that person.”

Brackett emphasized she wants people to feel free to walk in and talk to her and get personalized help with their digital camera.

Brackett believes people don’t print enough and some print on low quality paper that won’t stand the test of time. “It’s nice to put a photo album out and be able to look at it without standing around someone’s computer screen,” she said.

While Brackett admits to some concerns about the current economic situation, she is confident her move to Portsmouth was right.

“The people in the neighborhood and my landlords have been wonderful, very supportive,” she said. “This definitely helps me to stay positive.”

In addition to her client services, Brackett’s own work is displayed on the walls of her store. “I’m very happy to be able to put my past experience to use now,” she said.
